A study conducted by researchers in New Zealand has confirmed that excessive screen time can harm children’s speech and language abilities.
For the study, published in APA PsycNet Advanced Search, scientists from the University of Canterbury assessed how electronic devices, including television, affect children’s language comprehension.
They studied more than 6,000 children aged 2 to 5 through reports from parents. The researchers found that children who spent more time using screens (around 2.5 hours per day) scored lower in language production and comprehension.
Additionally, they also noted that these children had less interaction with their parents. The scientists further stated that a “linear relationship” was found, meaning that the more time they spent in front of a screen, the worse the results were, especially in cases of greater exposure.
